[Clogher, Co Tyrone - Ann Wrightson] [Miscellaneous] [Wrightson of Aldborough, Yorkshire]
Most of the Wrightson's on this page are descended from Anthony Wrightson of Yorkshire, who was in the service of Richard Aldborough of Ellingthorpe Hall (Ellenthorpe Hall), Boroughbridge, Yorkshire. Anthony was thought to be the Estate Agent & friend of Richard Aldborough. Anthony was of the 'Aristrocratic class'.

Wrightson Lane (provided by Brendan Hall) photo
Wrightson's Lane is a long narrow lane connecting
Clanbrassil Street to Chapel Street. It now bisects the grounds of the
(former) Christian Brothers Secondary and Elementary schools.
I was looking through transcriptions of 'Old Dundalk Title Deeds' in the
Journal of the Louth Archaeological and Historical Society, 1981. One deed
(for Thomas Finegan, Dundalk, weaver) refers to a plot of land being
'bounded by the Chapel Lane on the front, by Wrightson's tanyard on the
south'
Another deed:
'Made 1 January 1838 between H. Howard, trustee Lord Roden's estate and
James Gildea and Martha Gildea, otherwise Wrightson his wife, and Mary
Kieran, spinster.
Tenement in Back Lane as then late in the possession of John Small
containing in front, eighty four feet, in the rere, forty eight feet and
extending backwards by the Mass House wall .... Renewal of deed 4 October
1772 between Lord Clanbrassil and Aldborough Wrightson, merchant which was
for lives of Thomas Read, Thomas Wrightson, only son of said Aldborough
Wrightson, the lessee, and Ralph Trewman, only son of Dudly Trewman,
Dundalk.
Term: Lives of H.M. Queen Victoria, HRH Prince George William Frederick
Charles, and HRH Princess Augusta Caroline, son and daughter of the Duke of
Cambridge.
Yearly Rent: Six pounds, six shillings sterling of the late Irish currency,
and twelve pence per pound receiver's fees to be reduced to four pounds,
four shillings if Aldborough Wrightson should before a certain day build a
house or houses on the premises.
Witness: Featherstone Briscoe.'
What I think the above means is that Wrightson's had a tannery bordering the
lane that became known as Wrightson's Lane though I can't identify the exact
spot where the tannery was situated. I'm sure (with further research) it
would be possible to find the exact position. The 1901 map of Dundalk shows
Wrightson's Lane as being almost entirely built up with houses (unlike now),
as does the 1864 map on my web site. The Mass House referred to above was in
Wrightson's Lane.
